Casting Crowns has a song named “Praise Him in This Storm”. Never has this song been on my heart as much as it has in the last month. As Hurricane Helene swept through my hometown in the mountains of North Carolina, I began seeing things through a whole new light.

In moments when we have absolutely no control, the only thing that we can do is turn to Jesus. It would be so easy to get discouraged and feel helpless, even hopeless. But Psalm 43:5 asks us, “Why, my soul are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God.”

We truly can praise God through the storms of life, whether they be literal storms or figurative ones. Through the destruction of Hurricane Helene, I have witnessed so much praise for God and his goodness. I have seen the church be THE CHURCH more so than I have in a very long time. While people are facing immense loss, they are also experiencing great love and support from the church. People have pulled together to provide for each other, to love on each other, and to share God’s word with each other.

When we remember that God is all powerful and holds our lives in his hands, nothing we face here on earth can truly destroy us. He is with us through it all. He has felt every tear on every cheek. He understands every heartbreak, sorrow, and pain. And he has promised us that when we seek him, trust him, follow him, that one day we will experience none of that ever again. He will wipe it all away in his timing. So let’s not just praise him in the good times, but let’s also praise him in the storms.

“I lift my eyes toward the mountain. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121: 1-2) Even now, though so many face loss from natural disaster, we can rest assured knowing that God is there to help, to rescue, and to restore.
