“Oh, soul are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see?” How often do these lyrics speak the truth of your soul? For me it is more often than I would like to admit. But I don’t allow myself to stay in that place. We’ve been given some great advice when facing these feelings. “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
I get weighed down stressing over every day life. Will I have enough money to pay all the bills this month? Am I teaching my kids healthy eating habits? I need to exercise more. I clean the house and after all that hard work the kids undo it all before my husband gets to come home to a clean house. And the anxiety builds more and more in my chest. My soul is weary.
The next lyrics of this song remind me that I don’t have to feel this way. “There’s light for a look at the Savior and life more abundant and free!” God never intended for us to feel so burdened. Life is a gift. My children are a gift. He has provided a way to unburden us so that we can live a life of joy. “Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in his wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.”
Jesus died, not so we spend our lives bogged down by the world’s standards, but so we could have abundant life in him. “Thro’ death into life everlasting, he passed and we follow him there. Over us sin no more hath dominion, for more than conquerors we are.” When we call out to Jesus in difficult times, he provides the peace and comfort to see us through.
When stress and worry try to creep in, I now do what this chorus suggests. I turn my eyes to Jesus. I look to His word to calm my weary soul. “His word shall not fail you, he promised. Believe him and all will be well.” Does this mean all my troubles will disappear? Not at all. But as I recenter my focus on Jesus, “the things of earth will grow strangely dim” and I begin to instead see all the joy that God has given. “In the light of his glory and grace,” I put my trust.
