Recently the kids and I were preparing to leave the house for a short road trip to spend time with my sister. As we were loading up, our neighbor wished us safe travels. Immediately, my youngest daughter said, “we should pray.” At that very moment, my little girl led us in the most genuine conversation with God, asking him to get us safely to our destination.
I’m a bit ashamed to admit that in my rush to get all four kids out the door and all their luggage loaded, I didn’t stop and take time to ask God to provide his protection over my family. But my child recognized the importance of doing just that. “Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Luke 18:17) God used my 7 year old that day to teach me a lesson. Each of us should follow her example, seeking God in every journey we may be living, regardless of how big or small. While I was busy worrying that I may be forgetting something, my child reminded me that God’s got this. I should have first turned to him before making any other preparations for our trip.
Matthew 6:33 reminds us to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.” If we want to experience the blessings that our Father has planned for us, we must form a relationship with him. And if we aren’t taking time to talk to him, to include him in every aspect of our lives, how can we expect to reap the rewards of his love? God’s will for our lives is far better than anything we could plan for ourselves. Therefore, we should be talking to him first and foremost, before taking any action; even actions as simple as a two hour road trip.
Prayer is essential in our walk with God. And I am so thankful that he gave me children to remind me of this when I get bogged down by the busyness of life. Let’s do as we are instructed in 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18. “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. ”
